Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason

4.0

This is a novel about Martha, a woman who has just turned 40, and her undiagnosed mental illness. Although it is sometimes mordantly funny, even hilarious, it goes to some seriously dark places, and it does so in extensive detail. There is some redemption at the end (including a diagnosis and helpful meds), but it comes so late that if I hadn’t seen from other reviewers that it was coming, I would have given up. In my current state of mind, it was worth reading. But at other times in my life when I was in a darker place, it might very well have pulled me under. Proceed with caution.
