The Noble Servant by Melanie Dickerson
4.0
Greed is the source of an evil plan that affects the life of Lady Magdalen of Mallin. Her people are starving. She would do anything to help them but the mines that once prospered are empty. Hope arrives in the form of a marriage proposal from the wealthy Duke of Wolfberg. As she travels to meet her husband to-be, she is betrayed by her servants and is forced to become the servant as her maid takes her place. When they arrive at the castle she is forced to tend to the geese. Not used to be in this position, Magdalen loses hope. That is, until she meets the very familiar shepherd named Steffan. She soon discovers that he is the true Duke of Wolfberg and that his evil Uncle has tried to have him killed and replaced by his own son. He discovers that she has been betrayed as well. Together, they have to find proof of the uncle's treachery and the Duke's true identity. In the meantime, they are both humbled by their temporary social stations and use it to their advantage. During their time trying to find a way to get their lives back, they both discover that what they have been looking for was each other.
This fairy-tale retelling of the goose girl is enchanting. Not only are Magdalen and Steffan are threatened and almost killed but they are forced to serve those who betrayed them. They are able to use their humbling situation and learn from it and together find a way to overcome it. Working together, they see each other for who they truly are and fall madly in love with each other. They also learn much about themselves. Another enjoyable read from Melanie Dickerson!
