This was chaotically organized in the best of ways.
The subtle building all throughout the book to that final moment? Stunning. So happy that was a continuous thing throughout the book and evolved with the main character’s knowledge of the world and their character growth.
Did I see that cliffhanger coming? Yes
Did it still shock and delight me? Yes
(And that my friends is how you play the popular tropes properly)
Our main character is a badass not (only) because she had to be but because why not be a healer and a fighter. The balance between the two was nice and made her inner monologues feel more natural like she was a real person fighting her intrusive thoughts.
I did not care for the whole … middle of the book? Anything that had her boyfriend had me checking out and skimming the pages I will not lie - gave me the ick sometimes when he was allowed to talk.
A man who didn’t give me the ick? Shadow princey - now that’s how you do a good hearted, dark and mysterious lover boy.
This was a great first book that really developed the world just enough for what it made out to do that we knew what the magic was and what rules it follows and how others in the world react to it and their users. I think if there was by more world building it would have been wasted and felt more like info dumping then the slow like oh ya we forgot about this thing that everyone knows. I really like that there was a divide in physical features that defined who was part of the Mortal Race and the Decended magic race- that is an interesting concept and I can’t wait to see if it gets expanded upon later or explained exactly why.
Overall this was better than I was anticipating and I am pleasantly surprised at how much fun it was to read ( even during the parts I wanted to skip over which admittedly wasn’t a lot)
