I enjoyed this novel!
It was useful that I read Nobody’s Normal by Roy Richard Grinker earlier this year. I learned from that book to be more aware of the relationship between time, place, and mental health . For example, diagnoses such as neurasthenia and shell shock were popular during WWI.
The electric shock scene was very distressing to read. It felt like torture, but it was "working"? Rivers had a tough reflection after that chapter. Some of my favorites parts of the book were his reflections. He is right that is job was not to heal his patients, but to get them in the condition to return to war. War was the reason they were his patients in the first place.
