The Dirty South by John Connolly
5.0

I love the Charlie Parker series and even though I buy the new book on its immediate release I don’t always read it right away as there isn’t another book waiting in the wings and the anticipation of me seeing Charlie again. I cannot help but give any Charlie Parker book 5 stars, after The Book of Bones it was like a new life had been given to the series not that it had grown stale or dull but after the previous book it was almost as if we were back to basics.

The Dirty South takes us back to a grief and rage filled Charlie Parker in the hunt for the killer of his family which has brought him to Arkansas and given I just came back from a trip to the very area where it is set I could easily picture the woods, the old garages, flea markets and ‘antique’ shops.

Even though we all know Charlie Parker given that this is the 18th book, Connolly has given us a new version of Charlie. We see his mindset and understand more clearly why I think the dead speak to him and why he is compelled to help them. We also see him come to the realization that even though he is alone in his grief he isn’t without support. The crime by some Connolly standards I think is fairly tame and the body count relatively low, Charlie as usual is winning ‘friends’ and influencing people with his caustic wit and sarcasm. Louis and Angel makes a cameo which I love always.

So I am now left to wait with anticipation for the next installment.
