The Clothes They Stood Up in and the Lady and the Van
by Alan Bennett
Not quite sure what to think of this strange little duo of a novella and a nonfiction essay by playwright Alan Bennett.
The first half, The Clothes They Stood Up In, is a short fictional work about a married couple who find all of their belongings gone when they come home from the opera. It was a strange little piece, about sex and growing old I guess.
I checked out the book for the second half, The Lady in the Van, about the author's real relationship with a woman who lived in a van in his driveway for years. The movie version stars Maggie Smith and is coming out on DVD in about a month. I don't quite know what to say about it either - oddly compelling and yet a bit dull.
I'm not sorry I read them, but I'm glad they were both short.
