A beautiful epistolary novel celebrating the triumph of human spirit and the importance of community in the aftermath of WWII. Although it takes some getting used to, I grew to love the use of notes and letters as the vehicle for the narrative, offering varied personalities and their perspectives of events. Similarly worth celebrating are the formidable female characters that drive the story and all of the well-written, lovable characters, whose strength, resilience and delightful eccentricities gives the story its sentiment of tenderness.
