This book was something special. The title is a little ridiculous (in a good way tho), but this novel deeply explores themes of girl and woman hood, friendships, romantic relationships, and self identity.
Originally, we follow a girl named Temi, a recent college grad. She has one goal in mind, and is to get a BBL. Her whole life she was used to people overlooking her because she didn't have any bum bum. We are then transported throughout her life and see her grown into the woman she is today that is insistent on getting some butt. We meet the women that are closest to her, her mom, sister, and her aunt. We then go back into their pasts and see the experiences that shaped them into being the women they are in the present day that the story is told.
I felt like I could relate to a lot of the characters in this novel. Ladun (Temi's sister) was my favorite character, her journey through life mirrored my own. When girls develop, life flips like a light switch . Her disdain for men based on her past experiences was something I really resonate with
I wish that I had a bit more closure on Ladun's storyline. As I said earlier, she was my favorite character in the serious. SPOILER (even though IK I'm the only person reading this lol), Ladun, after all her heartbreak and distrust of men, ends up with this guy. She really grew to love him, but finds out that he's running a criminal operation. She got pregnant with his baby and ended up aborting it. I know that she planned on leaving him but we actually didn't see the aftermath of it. But that's something I'll have to live that.
Shout out to Professor Tito, he was such a healthy male figure in all the women's lives. He was such a caring and amazing father figure, and his death was impactful, you can see how it haunts all the characters for the remainder of the novel (especially Ladun). His relationship with Ladun was one of my favorites in this novel, their bond was unbreakable. His nickname for her was his "first fruit" and to see him step up and take such good care of her despite the circumstances makes my heart melt.
I think on of my favorite aspects of this novel was that I felt like I was living life with them, their heartbreak was my heart break and their wins were my wins. The characters truly felt alive off the page.
I can't wait to read more from this author. Her short story collection is something I want to read either this month or the next (but I have to work through my book TBR first)
