Cassie was not always the smartest or most loveable heroine, but I actually appreciated that about her. The author gives her flaws but uses them to drive the plot forward through her protagonist's actions that are influenced by her not so thought out decisions. I would've liked to see more of Cassie's family dynamic and how that influences the way that she thinks and acts. I definitely think this kind of slightly impulsive protagonist is the right fit for a romance with a reluctant and shy vampire. She moves the plot along in the right way.
It was nice to see a vampire love interest who wasn't so 'alpha male' and dark and broody. I think that the author definitely draws from the things we love about vampire boyfriends without making it too cringey or overdone. I especially liked that his whole thing was making an effort to learn about the world around him.
I liked the tension of the romance between the two of them, but it felt a bit rushed after they first kissed. I definitely think this could have been a little longer and more drawn out.
I usually dislike pop culture references in books, but this wasn't too bad because they didn't seem out place and weren't so overdone.
Esmerelda and the world of vampires definitely could have been expanded on a bit more. We got steady hints of them throughout the book and then a bunch of action happened with them off page at the end which seemed kinda rushed. The culture of vampire marriages in this book is really interesting and I would love to know more, like can vampires have kids?
Overall a pretty good book if you're looking for a lighter read that still has tension and a tiny bit of mystery.
