A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
3.0

We actually own the last movie on DVD, and really loved it. It was interesting to see how much liberty the scriptwriters took with the story. Fortunately, I looked at when the story was originally published (1905) so I was not surprised at some of the language in it (there seeming to be little social difference between slaves and servants, for example), and not really surprised that, while the ending in both the book and the movie was ultimately happy, the book was also more tragic. But that was the reality of 120 years ago.

After I finished, learning about the life trajectory of the author, it was clear that her own life was an inspiration for the story. Nevertheless, I found myself more than a little disturbed by the classism that it was steeped in. While I appreciated the theme of strength, there was so much of it that was so dated that I found myself questioning having any children read it, unless a conversation happened afterward. But, not having kids, I have no idea how common that might be.

Despite all that, I did like it, because it got me thinking about a lot. And wondering if I'll enjoy the movie as much anymore.
