Written back in 2003 Brian Keene's The Rising along with Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead and Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later ushered in the new age of the zombie in pop culture.

2013 saw the publication of the Authors Preferred Edition via Deadite Press. This fixed the numerous typos in the original edition and added in some extra content which was omitted by the publisher of the original edition.

For the the most part The Rising works well, it's essentially the story of a father, Jim, desperately trying to reach his son Danny (who is living with his mother and her new partner) hundreds of miles away. This story is playing out amidst a nightmarish zombie apocalypse. A handful of other characters feature throughout Frankie, a junkie, Thomas, a priest, Baker, a scientist and a few more besides.

What works well about The Rising is the pacing, the core characters, and the story which soon builds up momentum to an impressive crescendo. Brian Keene has a knack for descriptive writing which seems to fit rather well for his niche of horror.

What doesn't work so well is the ending which is rather abrupt, especially considering how the story builds momentum, and a few elements of the story. Keene has stated he doesn't see The Rising as one of his best works despite its popularity and he would approach things differently if he were writing it today given his years of honing his craft as an established writer.
