➽ In Volume 48 the Strawhats set out to stand against Moria and get back their shadows. We have a lot of great fight scenes, starting with Usopp who proves himself against Perona. I love that he's getting more confident after rejoining the crew at the end of the Enies Lobby Arc! So when he says he's got it, his friends trust him to handle Perona. Her negative ghosts paralyze everyone else, but Usopp is already negative, so it doesn't work on him. Seeing Perona's shocked face was such a delight, one of my favorite panels so far! It was simply an iconic moment for Usopp to say he was too depressed to be affected by the ghosts. I'm so proud of him, as Perona tries to rebound and trick him, but he manages to catch her off guard again!
➽ Meanwhile, Sanji is trying to save Nami from Absalom's forced wedding and clashes with him. I love how tenderly he's handling Nami, who is still unconscious, so he doesn't get her hurt in the fight. We also find out that Sanji wanted to eat Absalom's devil fruit (the Suke Suke no Mi), to gain the power of invisibility. I wish the author had shown the contrast between Absalom (who drugged Nami for the wedding and sees her as property) and Sanji (who shows up as Namu's knight and handles her with respect) better. Instead, we get a cheap gag that Sanji wanted the devil fruit for his own peeping, which made me cringe. I love Sanji, but specifically, the pervert aspect of his gag goes against his inherent kindness and feels out of character!
➽ Somewhere else Zoro is fighting against the Samurai Ryuma in order to get Brook's shadow back for him. Chopper is facing off against Hogback, furious with his disregard for life and the creation of the Zombies. However, the fights are all interrupted when Oars - now infused with Luffy's shadow - is rampaging across Thriller Bark. He's a powerful enemy, so anyone (apart from Nami and Luffy) comes together to defeat this huge monster!
