Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

4.0

I’m tired of coming out. All I ever do is come out. I try not to change, but I keep changing, in all these tiny ways. […] And every freaking time, I have to reintroduce myself to the universe all over again.

IF YOURE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT READ SIMON VS THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA AND CLAP YOUR HANDS

Warning: This review is not much of a review because, really, it’s just me gushing about how adorable this book is.

This book is a huge breath of fresh air. I can’t remember the last time I’ve ever read a YA contemporary romance book that isn’t set in a stereotypical high school with teachers who turn a blind eye to every shit that happens, and doesn’t have walking cliche for characters with parents who don’t give a shit about them. While I was reading this, I could not stop smiling. This was everything I’ve wanted from a contemporary romance. The story might be cliche but it was beautiful. A heartwarming coming of age story is what the lgbtq+ community needed. This book makes me so genuinely happy !!! I love Simon!!! I love his relationship with his parents, his sisters, his friends!!! I love the adorable storyline!!!! I love how homey this book felt!!!

I love the fact that Simon is so close with his family. They have their own little traditions, they play games with each other, they watch the bachelor together. Their interactions were just so nice and it was just so refreshing to read about a normal family. I love how supportive and understanding his parents are and how they were always there for him. AJSJSJSJ I just love the family aspect in this book!!! It’s not everyday that we get a YA contempo with a character who has a good relationship with their family.

Being secure in your masculinity isn’t the same as being straight.

I love the adorable friendship Simon has with his friends. The fact that they didn’t even turn Simon’s coming out as a huge deal was so nice. It was like it was just a normal thing for them. They’re so funny and cute and their hang outs are always fun and they just make me so happy. I literally cried when they fought because it hurt so much.

The emails storyline was so adorable!!!! I love Blue and I love their emails and I love how they have those little inside jokes. Ajsjsjsj It was so cute I couldn’t stop myself from smiling ear to ear whenever I’d read their emails. Anyway, I totally knew who Blue was the moment Bram made an appearance. I had a gut feeling that it was him and I was right! There are so many cute scenes I wanna discuss like when Blue left a band t-shirt on Simon’s locker!!!!! And that scene when Simon, on the verge of losing hope, finally meets Blue!!!!! That note on the shirt with Blue’s phone number!!!!! That last scene in Simon’s house!!!!! AAAAHHHHH THIS IS THE CUTEST BOOK I’VE READ IN A LONG TIME AND IM SORRY FOR GUSHING BUT THIS IS JUST SO ADORABLE AND IT’S SUCH A HEARTWARMING BOOK IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY!

The only reason I couldn’t get myself to give this book a 5/5 was because I wasn’t a fan of the writing style. However, it didn’t really ruin the book for me and I still really loved it despite of that.

In conclusion, I was so happy by the end of the story that I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I immediately watched the film right after I closed the book and it was as adorable as the novel. It didn’t actually stay true to the book but the feel of it was still there, the characters were portrayed perfectly, and the the whole message of the book was delivered. I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to go and read more Becky Albertalli books.

sometimes it seems like everyone knows who I am except me.
