Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

5.0

Lola and The Boy Next Door is a companion novel to Stephanie Perkins’ first book, Anna and The French Kiss. The book Anna and The French Kiss was a bestseller, every single person that read it seemed to fall in love with the book. When Lola and The Boy Next Door came out in 2011 everyone was waiting for it, and it did live up the readers’ expectations. Perkins did it again and everybody felt in love with the new characters. The last instalment in these novels will be Isla and the Happily Ever After, which will be released on May 14th next year.

Lola is a very special girl. She lives in San Francisco with her two dads, she also dress as whatever she feels like to. She loves to create different crazy outfits, playing with colours, shapes and crazy wigs. Lola is dating Max, the typical rock-band singer; he is also quite older than Lola. She works at the movie theatre were she is colleagues with Anna (from Anna and The French Kiss).
Her life is actually great until her old neighbours, The Bells, came back. The Bells twins are Lola’s worst nightmare. Calliope is a professional ice skater; she used to be Lola’s friend however she decided one day that Lola wasn’t cool enough. Cricket used to drive Lola crazy; in addition to that, he broke Lola’s heart.
Nevertheless, Lola’s feelings evolving Cricket aren’t that clear when they reappeared on the neighbourhood. When Lola’s past reappeared, it turns her present upside down.

Lola and The Boy Next Door was a pretty lovely read. The originality of Lola’s character mixed with Cricket sweetness was perfect. Moreover, the way things turned complex when they were pretty simple made the story felt extremely real. As St. Clair and Anna appeared they brought the story to a closer plane. In addition to that, I thought it was interesting to see a breakup from the one “creating” the problem eyes.
On the contrary, I missed some settings around San Francisco; in the same way there were some around Paris in Anna and The French Kiss. Also, I found Max’s scape too easy and kind of predictable; what I mean by this is that it would have been more original if Max had acted as a “good guy”.

Overall, with Lola and The Boy Next Door Perkins had made it again. She has turned a topical plot into an original romantic story. If you enjoy romance and liked Anna and The French Kiss, don’t even think it twice and go right into this one.
