Off the back of Jurassic Park I decided to investigate more into Crichton's work. This book was horrible, I'm sorry to say it. A very disappointing read that doesn't actually go anywhere. I could tell from the moment the characters entered the 'Congo' what was going to happen, and so will you. No twists, no turns. Somehow, packing the book choc full of historical references and notable african expeditions by Europeans was going to make up for an actual story. First 100 pages is explaining how their satellite works, the rest builds and builds to a predictable end. Out of date stereotypes, ridiculous situations that are to be read with no winking. The monkey parachutes out of a burning plane...if you want to dive into this story. Read it ironically, then you might enjoy it. Sorry Mr Crichton. Epic miss.
