City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

4.0

I admit, I first read this book a few years ago and I loved it. Until I got to the end. And then I just couldn't anymore. But my friend assured me that it got better throughout the series, and holy shit was she right.
I went into this after reading [b:Clockwork Angel|7171637|Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)|Cassandra Clare|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1369452257s/7171637.jpg|6674837] and so my second-initial-opinion was "oh jesus, these are the same characters just with different names".

Clary is actually a really well developed character- she's smart, she's human (meaning she's not perfect), and she's got spunk- which I find really nice in a world where many heroines in YA are only good for looking pretty, being helpless, and making dumbass decisions. She does have some similarities to Tessa, but I think Tessa is a great heroine too so we can let it slide.
I was most impressed by the development of Isabelle and Alec, especially since I thought they were going to be Jessamine and Jem carbon-copies. I really grew to like the characters, and my fondness has continued to the third book (the farthest I've read in the series).

Jace is basically Will, but I kind of like him a bit more than I liked Will at the start of the series. Jace is problematic, but I would so love for him to be my boyfriend. Minus the whole shock at the end.

This book is not a Twilight dupe. This is actually a great series and, while the writing isn't absolutely amazing, the story and plot are executed really well. I would definitely recommend this series with no reservations.
