My Monticello by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson

5.0

I'm not sure I would have enjoyed this one as much if I had read it instead of listened to it. The authors language is so descriptive and the narrator was so good that I felt transported in a way I'm not sure my brain would have done on it's own just reading it. I also enjoyed the essays in the beginning read by different narrators/performers...especially Control Negro read by LeVar Burton.

When it comes to the story itself...I don't really know how to describe my feelings about this book. It was phenomenal, but also really devastating. Mostly it was just vivid and real and Da’Naisha's emotional struggles along with the situational stress of the "Unraveling" kept me hooked and the book will linger with me for awhile.
