I was skeptical when the introduction to this book stated that it was not a memoir about Mormonism. I wondered how that might be true, when Westover's childhood trauma stemmed from her family's role in the church. I couldn't have been more wrong. Mormonism only provides the context within which Westover tells the story of her family. Educated is first and foremost a tale about the power of an education in an abusive household. I found myself lost in the pages, and I recommend this to any and everyone.
"The thing about having a mental breakdown is that no matter how obvious it is that you're having one, it is somehow not obvious to you. [...] Why it's better to think yourself lazy than think yourself in distress, I'm not sure. But it was better" (307).
