a0aa 's review for:
This Side of Paradise
by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Okay so I kind of had a hard time with this idk?
I mean I practically fell in love with Fitzgeralds writing in Gatsby and the beautiful and damned, so I had very high expectations for this one. I had a very hard time following the plot though, and although I've read now several review with similiar impressions like I had, I kind of feel like I didn't do the book justice.
For starters, I really liked the beginning. I thought that Beatrice and Amory together made quite intresting combination of characters. I was kinda sad that Beatrice didn't really play a major role for the rest of the book.
The first book, especially the whole Princeton time was really hard for me to gett through and this also made it very hard for me to really grasp Fitzgerald intentions with the whole part of the book.
I kind of loved the writing in narrative drama in which he meets Rosalind and I really enjoyed theri conversations tbh. The second half of the book was in general for me easier to read, although the ending with his whole talk about economics and socialism kind of bored me and made me think even more about Amory as a self absorbed prick who likes to force his views on anyone and everyone.
Anyway, I have the inention to read it again, to really understand the purpose and development of Amory because I did rush through the book. But I already know that I won't like it nearly as much as Gatsby or The B and D. There is somehow a lack in finesse in plot and even though you can already sense Fitzgeralds unique writing style and absolutely beautiful phrases, you can also immediatly tell that this was his first book.
