I liked book 1 enough to keep reading the series -- I know several people who love it and I want to love it too... I almost stopped after book 2 because it seemed relentlessly bleak, but read 3 because I cared enough about half of the characters. Having finished book three today, and having liked it better than 1 or 2, I have "book 4" lined up and ready to go, but may need a break before delving into the 1000 pages that book 4 inflicts/promises. I don't really agree with the Tolkien parallels, but it is of epic proportions, and a good read before going to bed (interesting enough to keep reading, not so enthralling that I stay up all night.)
