It's strange to read a dystopian book set in the current year (2025) - at least the beginning of the book. It's a disheartening portrait of what our world could become - walled off communities to keep out the poor and violent; company towns that enslave their "workers" with debt; drug addicts that set fire to buildings and people; unavailable or too-expensive water; and more. In the midst of this, Lauren has developed her own religion - Earthseed. In the end, Lauren and the eight other people who have joined her, find a place to build a community. It's a hopeful ending, but who knows what the sequel will bring.
Moderate: Drug abuse, Racism, Rape, Suicide, Violence, Trafficking, Murder
