Stalky & Co. by Rudyard Kipling

3.0

THIS is a disturbing book. Apart from frequently finding it hard to follow through the Latin, schoolboy argot and arcane public school rituals, many of the events depicted are worrisome. Apparently Rudyard Kipling used to laugh uproariously when he told his family of the exploits he planned for these boys, but today shooting a cat to stink out a neighbouring dormitory seems just a little callous.
Surprisingly the three main characters are not adept at sport and have little or no interest in cricket which is a refreshing change for a book of this genre.
This book presents an interesting as an example of what was regarded as suitable reading for Victorian schoolboys who would eventually be expected to go off and fight for the empire against the Afghan, Boar, Hun, etc etc.
