Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

The characters and their interactions with each other were very well written. I often felt like I was right there, listening into actual conversations people had. Whether it was at a social engagement or travelling by train, it was immersive in a conversational way.

That said - and this is only personal preference - I really didn't care for the premise of the book. It isn't something I find engaging. I knew this going in, but wanted to read what the fuss was about.

So I was stuck in this odd place where I felt entirely immersed, yet hardly engaged for decent portions of the story.

Google the book, look at the wiki article, and read the themes: "betrayal, faith, family, marriage, Imperial Russian society, desire, and the differences between rural and urban life." If these themes interest you, this is your book. It is expertly written and paced wonderfully.

I think the wide array of themes is what kept me entertained for the entire story. I couldn't care less about faith and desire, for example. But every character's thoughts on dealing with betrayal, managing family and marriage, and even peeking into Imperial Russian society were all very interesting to me.
