I've seen a lot of hate for this book based on the writing style. Honestly, it feels very fitting, both between the feelings of loss for the MC and the constant drug use, I got the sense that he felt lost and in a fog. The audiobook (performed by the author) was really well done, so perhaps I'd have felt differently if I had read it instead.
I really liked the overall idea of memory being imperfect, and that we are the authors of our own histories. A lot of the other reviews I read seemed to totally gloss over this major revelation from Gabriel's grandmother, which explains the whole narrative of the book: the son trying to decide how to memorialize his deceased father, and how there are many layers or truths to a person.
