You may find the ending abrupt but the second to last sentence explains why. Really enjoyed this book. Perfect blend of great gatsby and swan lake
Graphic: Grief, Addiction, and Animal cruelty
Some other reviews have mentioned how they didn’t quite get attached to the love story between our main characters but I believe it’s supposed to be reminiscent of the “great love stories” like Romeo and Juliet and Anna Karenina. The author foreshadows their tragic love by comparing their love to those stories in the final chapters. She asks us “Can Forster stop the metaphorical train that’s heading towards Detta?” No, he can’t. Detta was always fated to have the same ending as the poor heroines in the other two stories mentioned. Because love (or possibly infatuation because of the heightened circumstances) unfortunately led to their downfall. Just like Romeo and Juliet and just like Gatsby and Daisy…”love is like death” and unfortunately it was self-destructive to this couple
