The Host by Stephenie Meyer

4.0

The world building and culture of the hosts was the best part. The plot itself was rather slow though. (It really needed to be 400 pages.)

I liked Wanderer. She was interesting but relatable. (For a body stealing alien.) Melanie on the other hand was your typical tough girl main character with a huge chip on her shoulder. She grew on me though. (Even if she has terrible taste in men.)

I hated Jarod!! Not only was he nine years older than Melanie, he was an abusive arse. It was bad enough that Melanie had feelings for him, but it made no sense that Wanderer loved him too. He made her sleep in a rock hole, hit her, threw her against the wall, and tried to kill her. How romantic…
SpoilerHis turnaround was too much of a 180. And so was Kyle's, Ian's brother. It wasn't gradual enough to make sense.

I liked Ian as a friend. It was obviously not going to stay as friends because this love triangle wasn't strange enough already. But I really wish she'd made Wanderer Asexual.

Jeb and Jamie were also great characters! I liked how much time was spent on Wanda's friendships.

There wasn't really an antagonist. (Because the Souls aren't evil. In a way, they're the good guys.) The closest thing we have to a villain, other than the jerk Kyle, is Wanda's Seeker. But though a constant threat, she wasn't in it much.

The ending was really good, but anticlimactic as well. I was satisfied and liked how it ended, but I wanted something more exciting, and for Wanda to play a bigger part in the climax.
SpoilerThe seeker was captured off page, and I really wanted Wanda to somehow play a part in capturing her. Obviously not physically. Like Wanda somehow tricked her or convinced her… idk.
It just felt like a let down.

My paperback version included a chapter told by Melanie, which I really loved. It needed to be in the book!
