The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene
3.0

As a tween, I loved these books... Then I re-read them as an adult and realized how AWFUL they are - the privileged beautiful blonde (Nancy), her heavier, not so smart, superficial best friend (a brunette, of course), the impossible perfection of Nancy (example: whatever skills a mystery requires, she magically acquires them with no effort; in one book, she must step in for a ballerina in a show and does so promptly although we've never observed her take a ballet class), the absolute whiteness of all characters, the valuation of wealth and the cultural supremacy of "western" values, etc.

Although I think these books deserve less than 1 star, I'll have to defer at least partially to my enjoyment of them at the age at which they were meant to be read. Still, if I ever have a child, I'll be sure to talk these through critically with her/him if they ever pick this up (I won't encourage them to do so but I will never censor books).
