The Darkest Night
by Gena Showalter
Although I don’t dislike the paranormal romance genre, it’s just not one I’ve sought out over the years. I’ve read a few here and there and really enjoyed quite a few of them, so I’m not sure what held me back from seeking out more of the genre. A few weeks back my niece asked me if I had ever read this series. It’s also not a genre she reads a lot, but a coworker had recommended it so she passed on the info. She was told it had a lot of funny bits. Well, I’m a sucker for a romance that also makes me laugh. That’s how I came to give this paranormal romance a try.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I’ve always been fascinated with mythology. The Greeks, the Romans, the Titans, folklore from China…it all captivates me. I was overjoyed when I realized this series deals a lot with mythology. Maddox and his family are warriors who were cursed by the Greek gods.
The connection between Maddox and Ashlyn is instantaneous and wonderfully delicious. Although Maddox has Violence inside of him, there is something about Ashlyn that helps to even out his temperament. And Ashlyn gets a reprieve from her “gift” when she’s around Maddox. While this is a huge reason these two are drawn to each other, it’s not the only reason. Their spark is undeniable.
Since this is the first book in this series, I did have to stop and think once in a while to keep the family straight. That’s only because there is a lot of information the author needed to include to pave the way for the rest of the series, I’m sure. Don’t worry. It didn’t take long, and I soon got to know everyone’s personality.
