I read this for my middle school book club.  This was a really fun fantasy adventure for middle grades.  I think the world-building is good and not overly complicated.  There are times the reader is thrown into the world without much explanation, but Morrigan is going through the same thing, so the reader is expected to just go with it and I appreciate that because it keeps readers curious.  There's a lot of lovable characters and good antagonists.  This book could've been a bit shorter.
I think the Battle of Christmas chapter wasn't entirely necessary.
I'm kind of interested in the sequels, they're just long books.  I think young readers will love this book because of the trials and adventure.  There's a mystery as to who the Wundersmith is and why Morrigan is in the trials.

Some spoiler thoughts:
I don't think Jack's role was necessary in this book, besides potential jealousy that Jupiter didn't pick him as a candidate.  Maybe he'll have a bigger role in the sequel books.
I'm interested to know more about Cadence.  Like we never went back to her once we learned her knack/gift.
We also don't go back to the shadows in the hallway, I think?
