esfinkel 's review for:
The Long Earth
by Terry Pratchett, Stephen Baxter
A slow and bland (another reviewer compared it to porridge) but curiously gripping read.
Fantastic premise--mediocre execution.
There's little tension in the story, or plot for that matter. Not the entertaining plotlessness of Douglas Adams, either. The characters are⦠characterized, but not especially endearing or compelling. They are a means for the authors to follow the story of civilization after a (lowercase s) singularity where man gains the ability to step to parallel earths. The exploration of civilizations and information and theories is all too broad to be very moving (or humorous).
I happened to enjoy the ideas, however, so the book was worth it for me. Read at your own risk.
