Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World by Dalai Lama XIV

4.0

Terrific book with sound teachings. Especially for the non-religious that hate religion. How does the Dalai Lama interact with all the Commoners and technology in life? I imagine him like the King of Kings sitting on his Throne on High in the Himalayas, meditating, doing nothing else, and not knowing what a cell phone is. Maybe I can meet him when I go to India next month.

I liked this part: Sopá(sp?) is the exercise of restraint based on mental ability. It's patience, tolerance, and enduring things well. Daily hardships brings a greater capacity for excepting difficulties without losing an inner sense of calm.
Obviously too much isn't the best but in today's society, is it so bad to shun all hardships, guilt, shame, etc,? Or could we actually benefit from having them in our life instead of desperately trying to eradicate every negative and hard thing? Once gain I'm quoting the not famous [a:Vinnie Tortorich|1515703|Vinnie Tortorich|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] "we shouldn't try to live our life as painlessly as possible."
