Monstress, Vol. 3: Haven by Marjorie M. Liu
3.0
3 stars.
This volume was just as gorgeous as the last one; the atmospheric sense in these pages is unmatched. I really enjoyed some of the down time we got with the characters, and I’d love to visit Pontus (while it’s shield is up of course). Kippa must be protected at all costs, though I enjoyed that most characters aren’t what they seen in the beginning. The final scene here REALLY has me wanting to read volume 4 immediately.
However, the story-telling really seemed to take a hit here. New mystery after new mystery was piled up on each other here, without first answering any of the previous questions. There were also points where there were huge leaps in the characters’ knowledge that never seems to be explained or super convenient plot devices (oh the place they’re looking for is exactly where they happen to be?how convenient). The book also seemed to return back to the issue of random weapons/powers coming out of nowhere, and then disappearing again later.
Overall, this was my least favorite of the volumes so far, but I’m hoping volume 4 can pick it back up me!
