Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
4.0

I'm going with 4 stars instead of 3.5, because as I stepped back after finishing the book, I realized how ambitious and well crafted this book is. It loses points for the sometimes disjointed pace and the disappointing depictions of the American characters (who mostly seem to be symbols or vessels for every quintessential "Black Experience" familiar to a wide American audience, instead of fully-fleshed characters).

The Ghanaian sections of the book are beautiful and rich, and taken together, the entire narrative approaches epic-ness. I often found myself going back to previous sections just to re-feel the emotion that Gyasi was trying to invoke by weaving a generational story rich with symbolism and poignant, painful meaning.

I was inspired by her vision and excited by the possibilities she revealed in exploring social, racial, and historical forces through the lens of a single fictional family.
