For the young reader, this might be a drawn-out story about the Ingalls family during the hard winter. As an adult reader, and reading this as a mom, I can only wonder how Ma and Pa managed to face the possible starvation and freezing of their family. Yes, they could have butchered the cow and survived but still, it's a story of a hardship most of us have never had to experience.
