"By The Fire We Carry: The Generations-Long Fight for Justice on Native Land" by Rebecca Nagle is a thoughtful exploration of how a murder case helped cement tribal sovereignty. Nagle explores how a murder trial that was eventually brought before the Supreme Court in 2020 has long lasting implications for Indigenous people in how the United States views their connection to their land. Weaving back through time to explain the history of the Muscogee people and their land, Nagle deftly weaves how history correlates to the current day and situation.
Having listened to Nagle's podcast "This Land," I appreciated this further exploration of the case that she originally covered in the podcast. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in an in-depth and carefully crafted book that explores a current issue through the lens of history. Nagle's narration is great in the audiobook.
