wilt 's review for:
The Obelisk Gate
by N.K. Jemisin
i struggled with this one even more than the first and by the end i was pretty pissed off for reasons i don't think were intentional. mostly i found the events boring and the bland writing style could not make me care about the goings-on in castrima. but the thing i disliked most was how un-mysterious it was compared to the first book. we finally get answers but the delivery never felt satisfying, and there are only so many 'Oh' moments you can drop before they lose their impact and i think that happened about 20 or so 'oh's ago.
it also felt frustratingly aimless in its purpose and like the plot really hasn't moved much further than where we were at the ending of the first book. there were still some cool scenes and i'll try to push on to the conclusion, but i really didn't care for this one overall.
