I feel emotionally drained and I fear I will never recover from this.
I came to know about Pachinko by pure chance: an account I don't even follow tweeted about several books, just the names, nothing else, and "Pachinko" immediately captured by attention. Almost since the first line I knew it would become one of my absolute favorites.
I guess, at first, I didn't expect this book to be so heartbreaking. It's full of good people, hopeful people, honest, and warm and loving. And they suffer so much. In four generations, not one of them lived a life free of pain. It made me think about our own life, as humans in general, and about my family's life story. I now fear that we all will certainly suffer through our lives. We, as well, will not, and are not living, lives free of pain.
It took me quite a lot of time to finish this. But I'm glad I could enjoy this longer, because it truly was a beautiful story; the way it was written, its characters, the setting, and even the drama. Sometimes I just had to stop reading, hug the book to my chest, and shed a few tears. Usually, more than a few.
When I turned page 479, already crying, ready to continue to the last page, I found out that that was it. I, to say the least, was not ready for it to end. I still feel a bit overwhelmed, honestly.
I will definitely cherish this story, this family, for a long, long time. I feel so grateful that I found this book.
