Mansion Beach: A Novel
by Meg Mitchell Moore
A modern take on The Great Gatsby, Nicola is in Rhode Island for an internship and staying in her cousin’s cottage. Cousin, David married Taylor, a wealthy heiress and businesswoman but the two have grown apart. Meanwhile, Juliana, who living in a mansion next door to Nicola, knows David from her past.
What I liked: I didn’t read the summary so I didn’t know this was a take on Gatsby, but a few times reading I was like, ‘oh weird this reminds me of Gatsby.’
Juliana is probably the most relatable character and I enjoyed the flashbacks to her past.
What didn’t work for me: I felt like there could be more about the podcast - it felt not needed.
The middle and end of the book lost steam for me and I found myself skimming.
The characters are all really unlikable.
Who should read it: You enjoy remakes of classics, rich people behaving badly and summery settings. The story is more about the characters’ and it is not a thriller or a mystery imo.
