The Word for World is Forest
by Ursula K. Le Guin
Le Guin really doesn't miss - knowing that this book was inspired by her disavowal of the Vietnam War makes the bleak story make a lot of sense, and the characters, while straightforward, are compelling. Perhaps not the MOST powerful of the Hainish Cycle, but definitely one of the more enjoyable reads for me.
