There were points where I questioned, “why would I read something that is so upsetting and difficult?”, before reminding myself my discomfort was nominal compared to the pain these characters (based off of real people) were experiencing. It’s also a hallmark of powerful writing, scenes invoked vivid imagery, internal conflict, and raw emotions. Reading the author’s note made these stories all the more compelling.
