I read this out of morbid curiosity after watching a video about it being banned/out of print, and it was a mixed bag. On the one hand, I liked it technically - the prose was so good, there was a lot of evocative imagery and I really liked the structure.
I read it over the course of a few hours in one day, so it’s definitely immersive. I think I agree with criticisms of the ending, and how people siding with the killer can perpetuate a false narrative about these kinds of crimes. I also think this was just an exploration of another horror situation, and that everything needs to be read with a critical lens - as Stephen King himself said, it isn’t responsible for the damage people who read it have done, but it shouldn’t be there to be used as fuel. There is an interesting discussion there about the danger of the book, if there is any.
It was in essence a kind of messed up Breakfast Club/ Lord of the Flies episode of Criminal Minds. Make of that what you will etc.
