This book was slow for me to get into at first, but the complexity of the characters and their dynamic relationships to each other drew me in. Butler does a phenomenal job illustrating the barbarity of slavery through the eyes of someone from the 1970s, while still telling an emotionally compelling story with a richly detailed plot and characters.
