Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia
5.0
Definitely love the Monster Hunter series. Much better than Correia's other series, "The Grimmnoir Chronicles."
In this first book, we are obviously introduced to all the main players and I connected to them pretty quickly. Owen is a lovable lug, despite his almost erotic love of guns and having a penchant for violence. But it pays off when he becomes a monster hunter.
The premise of monsters existing but being hidden and controlled by the government and several private companies is a great one and all the hunting scenes are perfectly crafted depictions of fantastical, gruesome action and violence.
My one buggaboo about Correia's writing is his almost pornographic descriptions of guns. While it makes sense for his characters to be gun nuts, the author's real world love of guns shines through and he wastes a lot of words on his descriptions of guns. Beyond that, he paints the world he has created wonderfully.
