trans literature > all other literature. i know i can't make that statement objectively, but right now that's the vibe. i loved the conversations about womanhood and transness and being an outsider of community in this book. the world was super fascinating and the characters were really fun to get to know, even if it was mostly surface level. but even that surface level-ness had an explanation - lorel was scared of getting too close to people because she was worried they'd find out she's trans.(idk if that's considered a spoiler but i figured it's better to be safe than sorry) i'd really love to read more books in this series/world, get to know some of the characters better, and explore the world a little more than we got to, but it's supposed to be a series so i'm not too worried.
Graphic: Animal death, Bullying, Confinement, Physical abuse, Torture, Outing, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Confinement, Transphobia
there is a lot of bigotry towards witches akin to xenophobia/racism but i didn't think that fit either of those
