Regeneration
by Pat Barker
I had low expectations for this, but found it quite profound and beautiful. Barker has a way with words that evokes a spirit and environment without going on much-- it really is a short book, only 250 pages, although the print is smaller than average. I expected never to look back on this, but I may pick up the rest of the trilogy someday. Complex and philosophical while still being approachable and sparse. War stories aren't typically my thing, but this did evoke a certain modernist theme that appeals to me, and fit in with the time period and the story he was trying to tell.
