saphirablue 's review for:
Arrival
by Ted Chiang
I'm only going to say something short for most stories but every story has been great and wow and I'm happy that the movie exists and therefore let me discover all these stories.
Tower of Babylon - Woha, pretty cool and interesting even though - I don't get the ending.
Understand - Very interesting, mindblowing and engaging. I think it's interesting that you think you read about a "good guy" when in reality you are reading about a "bad guy".
Division by Zero - To be honest, the math stuff went over my head but I like the way the story is written. First the math explanation, then Renees POV and then Carls POV. Also, even though I didn't understand most of the math? I still understood (got explained) enough to understand why Renee is so distraught about what she discovered.
Story of your life - The reason I bought this book and wow. Even though the movie changed a lot, some of the things are very much the same and therefore movie and story impact each other and made the reading/viewing experience even more intense and better.
Seventy-two letters - Oh, this story. Terrifying but at the same time hopeful and uplifting. I think, besides Understand and Story of your life, this is my favourite story of this book.
The evolution of Human Science - Huh? I mean, the glimpses of this world are interesting but it's been a bit too short for my tastes.
Hell is the absence of God - Yeah, this story just reinforced why religion and (certain kind of) religious people are not for me. It still makes me angry when I think about it. Even though, this world? Would make an awesome playground for more stories or even a movie/TV-show.
Liking what you see: a documentary - Well, while I get the underlying message of the story and in general approve of it - I'm not agreeing on some points of it. Like, forcing calli on your kids or demanding that someone uses (or not uses) calli when they want to study/work/etc. somewhere.
I really like that there have been story notes at the end of the book in which Ted Chiang briefly mentions his inspiration to write each story. I'm always interested in this. :)
So, all in all? Highly recommended. :)
