Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix
5.0

Favorite quote: "So we will not be stupid girls,’ Bella said. ‘And we will not be useless girls,’ Jane added. ‘And we will not be powerless girls’, Yetta finished” (P. 223).

Backdrop: 1909-1911, New York City

Historical Event:
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire - March 25, 1911. Known as one of the deadliest workplace accidents in American History. 146 workers died, mostly women and girls (the youngest being 14 years old)

The story follows three young women in early twentieth century New York.

1) Bella is an Italian immigrant who came to America with a single outfit and very little knowledge of English. She gets a job at the factory and works long, gruelling hours with little pay. She comes to America with no family and finds a new family of her own.

2) Jane is a member of high society who is invited by a college friend to a strike. Her restlessness leads her to become more involved in the strike, where she meets Yetta and Bella.

3) Yetta is a Russian Jewish immigrant who hopes to make a life for herself in America. She and her sister Rahel see themselves as revolutionaries. She was a vocal voice in the Shirtwaist Strike of 1909 (also known as the Uprising of the 20,000)

This book set the bar high for 2023. Every moment of the book, I was charmed and intrigued by the story being told. Each girl's perspective gives the story beautiful layers and makes you think.

This book also reminded me how important conscious consuming is. These girls' stories echo the stories of many around the world still working in harsh and unsafe conditions, forced labor, and sweatshops. Being aware of who made our clothes, how much they are paid, and how fast fashion exploits workers is so very critical to making the world a better and safer place for all.
