I really enjoyed this book, it definitely got me out of a reading slump!

I really loved the story, although it was fairly long, there was no end to the drama and intrigue.

I liked the setting of the book, it’s not something that I often gravitate towards in my reading and has pushed me to research this historical period that I knew next to nothing about.

I didn’t find the narrator, Claire, a particularly endearing character. I thought she was rather annoying, pretentious, and showed little to no character development but I enjoyed the story none-the-less.

TW and spoiler:
I also though that the graphic description of Captain Randall’s rape of Jamie Fraser was unnecessary. The author had established Randall’s preference for men over women already and Jamie enduring/overcoming this trauma was not a focal point of the novel, because it happened so close to the end. In summary, I think this was an unnecessary and used purely for shock value. That being said, I don’t know how this theme/topic comes into play in the subsequent books in the series.

I don’t think I will read the subsequent novels but I do look forward to watching the television show and seeing how it holds up compared to the source material!
