When Detective Lena Adams is held for a suspicious case of arson, Jeffrey and Sara come to Lena's hometown to vouch for her. But Sara's distraction from a recent malpractice lawsuit allows Lena to escape custody. Now Jeffrey and Sara must figure out what Lena is hiding, including what happened to her uncle, who has been missing in recent days.
The final chapter of the Grant County series is bittersweet. On the one hand, it's fascinating story, told both before the arson and after Lena's escape, as Jeffrey and local law enforcement try to track her down. The mystery is more central than in previous installments, where Jeffrey and Sara's fractured relationship sometimes overtakes the murder at hand. But the ending comes all too soon and, although I sympathize with the author's feeling that only so many serious crimes can happen in one small community, it's hard to say goodbye to these characters I've come to know and love. On to the Will Trent series!
