Mudwoman by Joyce Carol Oates

3.0

I started this book several times and just couldn't get into it, even though I'd been to see Joyce Carol Oates at a reading and had found what she read from the book intriguing.

Having finally read it, I'm not sure what I think about it. I really wanted to like it, especially since I'd really enjoyed the reading, but something just didn't quite work for me. I enjoyed some aspects of it, but felt irritated by others. For instance by the time I'd read 6 times about her (secret) lover, I had got the message. Yet he was still being referred to that way in the last few chapters.

As some other reviewers have commented, I'm not sure I found the main character entirely believable - or maybe it was just that I didn't find her hugely likeable.
